Summer Time and Few Moments of Coolness with Hydrangeas

Faint blueish Hydrangea

I always find hydrangeas refreshing to look. To me, they are summer time coolness flowers. Part of the name (hydra) means water. Although it means Hydrangeas need plenty water to glow well but they produce cool and refresh blooms in return.

I do not know that was because of their color tones or what else but I always feel refresh and coolness when I look at Hydrangea. The feeling may just be a flash of a moment or two but I know it is there. I guess I am biased because I love the flowers. They are just irresistible to me.

    Beautiful picture. I have always wanted to grow these. My grandmother had the blues by her front door. We have tried several times and the do not want to grow in our yard.

      Oh, I am sorry to hear. I do not know they are hard to grow or not. I saw people grow them in places that seem harsh but they seem to be doing well. I think they do not like full sun or really shady. Thank you.

    The hydrangea blooms in Japan at time of the rainy season. The hydrangea in the rain is very beautiful. I am a favorite flower, too.

    That’s an absolutely gorgeous picture of a Hydrangea! 🙂 How did you get that lovely darkened background? I’m hoping to take a bit more photography with my new phone, I especially like flowers. Would love to get that darkened background right if I get a good image I can use.

    Those flowers always remind me of a house my family lived in when I was between the ages of three and five, we had a Hydrangea plant in the front garden trimmed into a dome shape. It had pink and blue flowers, so beautiful, it’s in my mind forever!

    I was only talking to my brother about Hydrangeas a week ago, he was telling me about the way the colour of the flower depends on the acidity of the soil. I remember my mother telling me that too. Unusual for flower colours to be dependant on the soil.

      There are few ways to make dark background picture. I am not an expert at it. I found this link – http://www.instructables.com/id/Photograph-a-Black-Background/?ALLSTEPS which seems simple and covers both indoor and out door. It should give some ideas of how to do it.

      The methods in the link uses dark paper or cloth to bring dark background. There are a couple other ways to do it without dark background object to help but it needs camera that lets you control aperture / shutter speed and off camera flash to do. It needs a camera that has aperture and shutter speed control as well as a way for it to control external flash. The trick is to set camera to get exposure that results in every thing is dark. Once set up, set camera to trigger external flash. Use external flash to point to the flowers and then take the picture. The flash will be the only light source that illuminates the flower but nothing else. This should give the dark background you need. It may need several tries to get the right brightness. This is the technique that I used.

      There is another technique that know of but it is less controllable than above. It depends on much on lighting on the scene. If light particular shines on the flowers or objects stronger than the background or surrounding then it might make camera to expose to the brightness thus less exposure to the background or surrounding. You have also know to spot this light condition.

      Oh those are lovely memory of your childhood. You have a new phone! Have fun taking pictures with it 🙂 I think your brother is right about acidic of the soil can effect the color of Hydrangea.

        Thanks for that! 🙂 Yes, a lot of that reminds of technicians I read about when I was into photography in my 20’s, I succeeded with people but never tried it with still life. I’ll probably have to try it with my main camera, it’s nothing special, but has enough aperture and flash settings to maybe get that right. I’m enjoying taking pictures with the phone, but they’re going to be a different kind of photography. Yes, I’ve finally gone android – (Samsung s4 mini)!! 😀 Have had a bit more money to spend on things like that recently, it’s been nice to buy a few items I couldn’t afford before. I’m looking forward to using the voice recorder on it. Those little phones do everything now, I’m amazed they don’t cook your dinner too! 😉

          That is great that you enjoy taking pictures with the phone. I think as long as you have fun then it is regardless of phone’s camera or other kinds.

          Ah, you are now an Android person. Congratulations! I am too. This little thing is cool isn’t it. At first I did not think I would depend on this device but now I do not think I can leave home without it. I got lost easily 😦 and Google Map on the phone that comes to rescue me a few times already 😀

    Yes indeed, one of my favorite flowers and like you I find hydrangeas refreshing to look at as well. We have them in our small cabin on Hood Canal (near the Olympic Mountains) and they are this fantastic blue color. When my mom took a couple clippings to Eastern Oregon to grow, they came out an intense red…unbelievable. They have a soul to match the place they are in. And to see the great white and a color I’ve never seen for them. Very cool. Great post.
