A little story for a cold winter morning:
I had a great chance to visit Galway, Ireland back in 2015. The hotel that I was staying is near a beautiful lake (it is Lough Atalia lake – I am not sure it is a lake though). I had a thought to get a good view of the lake one of the mornings there. The first few mornings were a bit disappointed from the cloudy skies and some rain. Finally, a great break with sunshine and clear blue sky morning came. Yes!
Just right across the road running along the hotel, I saw this great view of a railroad bridge across the lake against a great blue sky. Great, I needed to get a little closer … but …there was one little problem. There were tall grasses along the bank of the lake. A big snake thought started flashing in my mind!! I have (bad) snake phobia. “There is no snake in Ireland, right ?” I asked myself. A calmer thought tried to reason. “Yeah, that must be true. Everybody says that.”. “OK, let go then”. After these few moments of the hesitation, I went deeper into the tall grasses and knelt down taking the picture (with still faintly fear in mind) 🙂
I was happy that I did and walking back to the hotel was a bit easier than the other way.
Please stay warm for those who live in wintry climate and be safe from the flu (it is very bad this year in the US).
It’s quite telling that our responses to an environment is very depending on where we come from. I would never even think of snakes when I enter a field of tall grass, simply because there wouldn’t been any where I live. At least overcoming your first hesitation was rewarded with some lovely images. Looks like a gorgeous day.

You are right! I have seen snakes hidden in bushes or were on the road etc. and have heard stories how people got bitten them around where I live. Not that there are many of them that I have seen or heard necessarily but I mainly am always afraid of them too 🙂
It was a gorgeous day indeed. Thank you Otto.

It is a wonderful winter landscape with clear air. Even if there is a snake, it is hibernating in winter.

Thank you wakasahs15th san. The time in the story was not winter time but the story for telling during winter time as a break from cold/grey weather. I am sorry I was not so clear.

fun story….
and that field would have had me worried about bugs and rodents too – but I can see why the snake phobia was on your mind….
and cool photo to open with – love the layers and the soft (weeds) and green to the back with the sturdy structure of the bridge – looks like a nice day temp wise too

Thank you and I am glad you like the picture! It was a nice day. If my memory serves, the weather was on a little chilly side and a bit windy too. I came back to the hotel after a few shots.

Great photos and nice memories, YC. So happy that you didn’t encounter any snakes in the grass. I believe that Irish grass does have some very bitey insects. 😯

The tall grasses add to the picture so I am glad you were brave enough to get in there! You can thank St. Patrick for getting rid of all the snakes in Ireland!

I learned later on there are some in zoos. I do not know they allow snakes as pets or not. If they do then there are some other places too 🙂

Ha, ha ~ great story and such a perfect example of the extent we go to get the perfect shot as photographers 🙂 My brother-in-law has a similar snake phobia, and there would have been no way he would have trekked into the grass even with St. Patrick ridding Ireland of snakes 🙂 Beautiful story and photos. Cheers to a great start to the spring.

Ha, I think your brother-in-law and can get along we well. I am sure that I will try ask him to go any place that we suspect might have some snakes. Thank you and Cheer!

It is so nice to hear you visited Galway, and there were no snakes 🙂 Living in Ireland gives you a sense of security that can easily betray you when you go to the other parts of the world.
