Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower was the first place I went to see soon after I touched down in Tokyo many years ago. I was hoping to get there before it got too dark.  It was the around this time of the year or around starting of summer. The day light should  last a bit longer but on that day it got dark a bit sooner.  I thought would miss the opportunity to see the tower during the day time but I guess the near dark scene itself was worth seeing.

I have not put much thought about the tower at the time but remembering it from seeing it from old movies or TV series that had big monsters (Godzilla, etc.) came to destroy the city. I just read about it later that its purpose is for communications (television and radio broadcasts) and observations.

There are elevators to carry tourists up to the observatory decks. The elevator was decorated with colorful lighting fixture inside. I really like it when I stepped in. It gives feeling of cheerful and fun.

There are two main observatory decks. You can have good views over Tokyo from the decks. Tokyo was a busy place but one of the street below did not look too bad at the time.

Among modern tall buildings there are interesting Japanese style buildings into the mix. I wished I could ask some one about those buildings.

Part of the observatory deck floor stretches out a bit and was made with glass. They are looking windows. You can step over and see the ground right below your feet. It gave strange feeling that you stood on air and could fall at any moment (at least it is for me 🙂 ).  I noticed that the ground below do seem to have a playground (a little train track there).  You can also see a small antenna attached.

There is a shrine on the observatory deck. It is “Great Shinto Shrine of the Tower”. From what I read briefly that it is the place students come to pray for their success in entrance exam.

On the way back down,  the returning elevator places you on the floor that have small exhibition, souvenir and snack shops. The exhibition showed small models of old houses. I am not sure what the exhibition was about but only guess it probably shows the houses around the area a long time back (about the tower was built?).

The details of the model houses and the items that made up the place are incredible. I always love  seeing the small models since I was young. This exhibition is just  a great eye candy for me.

I could spend a lot of  time exploring this small world;  following this street,  that street looking at the shops, houses and be absorbed by their realistic details.  I hope you get a feel of them too.

This is one last snap – the queue lines to elevators to the observatory deck.  I hope you enjoy the tour of Tokyo Tower. Have a great Summer.

Hi! I just recently got back from Tokyo, too and it really is an amazing city! Your photos and writing are extremely insightful too!

Harajuku, or one of the most crowded shopping areas in Tokyo, felt like (to me) “a strawberry milkshake that smoothly blends history and youth, culture and identity, and pink hearts and gothic skulls together. It melts on your tongue, leaving a bittersweet residue, and rides down your throat, stirring tropical sensations throughout your veins”

I’ve never been to the Tokyo Tower though, but after reading your post, I am more than excited to return to Tokyo and check out the famous tower.

That is a very good analogy for Harajuku. I tried to remember the place what it was like then. I could only recall the place was busy (I guess many places in Tokyo are busy). But I can see how old culture are blending with the younger generation of today there. They blend smoothy as for sure a “strawberry milkeshake …”. Thank you.

I recently just go back from Tokyo, too, but sadly, did not have a chance to visit the Tokyo Tower. After looking at your amazing pictures and descriptions, I would definitely give Tokyo Tower a try next time I go back there!

🙂 I am happy that you like the new look of the blog. I just lost the count of how old this blog is now (at my age I do not want to count or remember my age any more 🙂 ). I thought it would a good idea to change the look once in a while. Thank you!

Great post! The tower is beautiful and I love the color combination of blue and gold. The miniatures are charming and they stopped my scrolling to take a closer look … I wasn’t sure if it was a real scene or not at first.

This is a fantastic post ~ a blend of the modern with the historical, and even a bit of nostalgia for me too (memories of seeing Tokyo Tower and Godzilla when I was a kid 🙂 I think you really caught the magic of the place with the night sky, made the scene a bit more surreal. Your post makes me want to go visit Tokyo once again ~ wishing you a great summer!

and omg – every student needs access to a place where they can go to “pray for their success in entrance exam” – hah!
I wonder about the buildings – and my favorite photo – hands down – is the fifth one down – the lines in the street – the lights and I wonder about the buildings too –

I like that view too. Looking at the cars or people doing their things far down below is like looking at a small model of city with small people doing their things. It is fascinating.

Just to share with you: I saw a street singer from Japan in Kilkenny, and then I saw him again in Waterford. He was dressed in a dark-brown gown and a placard said that he is travelling the world. His voice is divine, and he also plays the guitar. I thought of you when I saw him 🙂

When I first saw this I thought it was the Eiffel Tower… I should have known, the colour… it’s completely wrong for the Eiffel Tower. What a view you get up there… great angles of the tower you took too! 🙂 It’s funny how the higher we get the more our ‘big’ earth and all it’s contents becomes so miniature… almost like a circuit board on a computer.

There is a lot of detail in those models… wow… I don’t know how anyone has the patience to create such intricate designs!

Hi Suzy, I am so glad to hear from you. Hope you are doing well 🙂

Isn’t it lovely and interesting to see the big world from high up and see how things around us normally look so small below. I actually had similar thinking about circuit board full of odd looking components. They look like miniaturized city. They are fascinating.

I haven’t been very well at all this year, which is why I’ve been away for so long. It’s been a bad year for me, but I am beginning to pick up in health now, not as fast as I want to, but getting there slowly! Apologies for the disabled comments on my blog. I’ve not allowed them for now because I want to use the energy and time I have on comments on other blogs, plus concentrate on blog posts I create. Thanks so much for all the lovely comments you have left me over the years, and for being such a great blog friend… your kindness is very much appreciated! 🙂

But I’m sure we actually live on a circuit board… haha… we’re all in denial!!!😅

Oh, I am sorry to hear that Suzy. I hope you regain your good health soon! Please focus on the most important thing first – your health and not to worry about anything else. As you age, the most valuable thing in life is your health. It is pretty much everything you have..

Please take a good care.. ha! yes you might be right about we may actually live on a giant circuit board somewhere 🙂

Apologies for turning off the comments on my blog… I hope you don’t feel too shut out. 🙄 I’m a little uncomfortable about needing to do that… don’t want to shut out my lovely blog friends. But answering a long string of comments is more than I can cope with at the moment. I’d rather spend my energy on leaving comments and not rush reading too many posts either… it’s quite a big change… taking a while to get used to it!

I may open the comments in a while when I’m feeling more able to handle them all again. Thanks so much for all the wonderful thoughtful comments you have taken the time to leave on my blog over the years, they’re all very much appreciated. 🤗
