Mr. Copperhead Visit

It was about this time last year that I had a surprised visit. Mr. Copperhead visited me.

This Mr. Copperhead thought he has found a nice cool and safe place for a summer afternoon rest (he could actually be “she” but in order to find that out I believe I needed to get more intimate with him/her — let’s better assume “he” for now 🙂 ). Well, unfortunately for him (and for me) the place happened to be underneath my garbage can.  Not so good idea for both of us but I did not blame him a bit.  The cool and peaceful place was no longer a peaceful one as I pulled the garbage can out for a weekly pick-up.  I was sure he was disappointed while I was so …. freaked out. Mr. Copperhead was less than few feet away from my feet. Aggrrr! … jumped … brain froze etc …

Mr. Copperhead was calm and perhaps was only a bit surprised by a sudden exposed to sunlight and saw a real scared looking man standing a few feet away. We looked at each other for a couple moments. Mr. Copperhead remained calm. He looked like a gentlesnake.  Good! That helped me calm down (but not by much) to allowed me quickly got on my feet to run … ah, hmm … to get my camera from the house 🙂 .

I am definitely a gentleman as well but in this case I had to be a bit less and took few pictures of him without I asking his permission.  I do not know snake’s language. I would if I could 🙂

We parted in a good way. I am sure I will see him or his kind again (as usual around here) but I hope not to get too close as with this visit again… 🙂

Note:  I can understand now why people call “copperhead”. The head of the snake is bright copper color.  I think Mr. Copperhead here is quite handsome. Don’t you think so?

    Oh my goodness! I think your Mr. Copperhead is more dangerous than my Mr. A. He is quite handsome, but I wouldn’t want to get too close after I read this on Wiki, “They’re also the most likely to bite, although their venom is relatively mild, and their bites are rarely fatal for humans.” Great photo though. 🙂

      No, you would not want to be close to any of them. They will bite if you post a real threat to them (e.g. step on it). They normally go on their way.

      You are right. The venom is not fatal but you definitely need medical attention.

      I was glad too. That was close to me. I am now much more careful when I go around the area. He might like it and come back again…

      So am I. They are quite common around here. I often see them around and need keep eyes on them at night.

    Good shot! 🙂 How did you manage to think of your camera in such a panic?!! I think it would be the last thing on my mind!! The only thing I ever find under my wheelie bins are weeds! The bins are parked on a rough piece of grass/gravel, they annoy me the weeds, but I shall remember next time I’m annoyed by weeds – it could be worse!! 😀

      Thank you Suzy! Oh, please look around or pay a bit attention when you pull the bin or work around bushes. Are snakes common around your area? Copperheads are native here.

      This Mr. Copperhead did not move fast and he was quite calm. That gave me to think of my camera 🙂

        Noooo….no snakes where I live!! 😀

        I guess there might be a small possibility of one if someone let loose a pet snake, that kind of thing does happen in Britain occasionally. So I shouldn’t be to complacent about ever finding one under the bin. 😉

        There are snakes which we call ‘grass snakes’ which sounds a bit of a silly title, as most snakes crawl in grass. They are often green like grass, quite small and thin and completely harmless – they don’t attack or bite as far as I know. But you would generally only find them in very rural areas. In Norwich they often call those areas ‘the sticks’ I found that really funny when I first moved to Norfolk, never heard of the country being called the sticks before. I guess that’s city people, anything with a bit more than a patch of grass – sticks!! 😀

    I think I would have had heart failure. OH WOW!!! What a scare and what a brave brave thing you did by taking this snake’s photo. He is beautiful, I must admit though. ❤

      Thank you Amy. No, I am not brave 🙂 He was not quite calm and that gave me a nerve to get a camera and take a picture from a bit of safe distance.

      I was avoiding getting too close as well. I have a zoom lens that help keeping distance a bit but not that far. Thank you.

    While my wife and I were staying at a motel in Borrego, CA we thought we saw a coral snake just outside our doorway. We ran to the proprietor who returned with a friend. Upon seeing the snake he told us not to worry… that it was a “false”coral snake and that he recognized it as such by the “order” of the colors. The animal was shooed away before I could get a better look at those colors. Nice lookin’ copperhead.
