I am not sure this is true for most professions or not. In the past few years, work places are moving toward more collaboration or specifically more toward team oriented. Working alone (I don’t necessarily mean in complete isolation) becomes thing of the past. I also don’t mean there is no time to think independently either. But the trend is more of doing more of coming to do works together at many levels. The goal isn’t for more quantity but more of quality.Β Pair working is encouraged for many things you do daily. I think it is a good thing.Β As a consumer, especially when you use health care service, it could make you feel better if you see more than one doctors work for our condition.
Of course there are things to overcome when you work close with others. I am sure you can think of few things that might be a problem. For me, the trend does not come naturally but over time I feel more comfortable, confident for things I do as the results have been through extra pairs of eye than my own, discussed, debated and consented. This reminds of “Stand by me” song. It may not fit the thought exactly here but it gives similar feel in a sense..
When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid, no I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me…Β
By Ben E. King
I really love this song! And your observations are very accurate – team work seems to become more and more of a thing. Though as an artist I can say that some things are best done on your own – it would drive me crazy if someone tried painting on the same sheet of paper at the same time. π

One of my favorites too. I still like the original but there others that do so well with this song too.
I know what you mean but it might be fun to try and see π

I also love this song, and now I think Iβll try playing it on my piano, but all by myself. π I often wish that doctors would work in pairs so that we could get a second opinion. Have a lovely weekend, YC. Itβs always a treat to see a new post from you.

I would love to hear and see you playing this song. You just reminded me watching friends jammed together on a Saturday night playing this song.
Please have a great weekend too and thank you!

A great song and good to be reminded of it. Team work or collaboration can be so useful and productive. I would like to have more teamwork in the house to make housework and cooking less boring!

Loved your photo, YC! And as for putting heads together to collaborate I think is a very good thing. I find many times I come up with a solution or a thought which someone else triggered by what they had said. Two heads are better then one. (smile)

You are absolutely right. I have read somewhere (I don’t know where now) that many mathematicians now doing more collaboration on attacking problems together. I think that is probably true for many fields too.

I really respect brain storming. More people ought to do that, and I’m so glad to hear that companies have begun to incorporate this with their employees. I think it is super productive and will benefit all involved.

To a degree, I suspect teamwork is a side effect of having a big enough staff to get away with it. For a small business assigning more than one person to a task would be a luxury. For a huge business, it can turn into a maze of bureaucratic obstacles. The trick is to find that happy medium.

You are absolutely right. For small companies, one person probably has to more than one jobs.

This is so true in many professions today. Nice post! As a counselor, working with others is essential. But as an artist, I prefer to work alone, (except if family members are also creating either in another part of a room or their own space, that’s fine). I do like creating with my grandkids, that’s always fun.

Good thoughts and image to go with them! For me a balance seems to work. Shooting with a friend from time to time is fun but I still prefer to shoot alone. I want my work to be unique and not influenced by anyone else … for the sake of ‘self ‘ expression. That works both ways … there have been times when sharing too closely with others, I’ve felt my creative ideas and vision have been copied. I am not sure how you are planning to collaborate with others but keeping some things to yourself is OK too! π

Yes, there are times when you need to have your own independent thinking or doing your work in isolation. I agreed with taking pictures too that I would prefer to do it alone. I have done few times a long time back with group. It was fun then but I think going alone is better. Thank you.

I agree with you. Collaborated work and going for quality rather than quantity is much better than the old way. I say that knowing I work a lot by myself, but every time there is an occasion to work in a team, I enjoy it very much. The solitary, budding twig is an example of the opposite.

You saw the contradiction of the lone budding twig and the words of this post. Indeed, I wanted to contrast of small, helpless and alone that begs for good companies to grow and together for stronger and better – “collaboration”. Thank you Otto for your comments.

I don’t know what is a real reason behind the trend, but I like what you say about the extra pairs of eyes. This makes sense to me, and is a good thing for sure.
When I look at your picture, I rather think about the words of the song you posted. A new tree grows on the old stump, and it won’t be lonely and afraid of the dark again β€

I don’t know the real reasons too but my guess is these days we seem to be more social than before as technologies let us connect to each other.
That is exactly what I had in mind for this post. Thank you π

What a great subject for a blog post. Working collaboratively with lots of new people is a key element of my job. You have to fit into a team quickly. Sometimes some people in the team have worked together before and have a clique and rapport already so that can need careful blending, you canβt try to jump in and upset a balance and you canβt just sit on the outside you have to make it work to get on stage chemistry π.

I know you always work as team and it is crucial that everyone needs to work together for success. That is in and of itself may not come natural for everyone. Everybody is different and everyone needs to learn how to work with each other. That is hard.
Thank you for your comments!

“Stand By Me” is such a classic song with lyrics all of us can relate to at one stage of our lives or another. I’m glad you brought it back to the forefront of my mind this morning!
I think it’s good that people have the ability to work well with others. Empathy is a character trait that is too often lacking in this world today. Having the decency and integrity to consider someone else’s skills, abilities and unique personalities are important. Seeing from someone else’s perspective just may enhance or clarify your own π
I think too that it matters what your work style preference is. While team work may be needed for some professions, as you said, others are more solitary and suited well for introverts. Most writers for instance need that balance between ‘alone, quiet time’ and connectedness.
Many blessings for you and yours, today and always π ~ Holly

You are absolutely right about “empathy” in this respect. People’s mood or emotion also vary from day to day as well. In such environment understanding other’s behaviors, accept them are crucial for success.
Thank you for stopping by Holly.

You alone.
Or you with others.
The denominator is the same.
You.
I mean everyone is exceptional, right?
I know they are.
You know they are.
But you are exceptional,
in an unique way.
I ought to know.
I’ve known you for a long time.
The biggest thing that defines you for me,
is your kindness and lack of ego.
How exceptional is that?

A wonderfully written and insightful post, YC, there is much strength to be found in a team…and strong individuals make it even better. Your opening photo fit both the title and theme of your post so well, especially with those great lyrics of one of my favorite songs. Cheers to a great autumn and a great week ahead.
