I am an Eagles fan. I always like most of their songs and a few I keep coming back to listen again and again. I even went to see their live concert 5 or 6 years back which was not typical for me. It was great even sitting up high and far far away from the stage.
For some reason, I feel like listening to “Take It Easy” song again this weekend. I know the lyrics before but perhaps just have not paid much attention to it (or just paid attention to just fun and music part of it :)). The theme was light and for sure gives you feeling to keep thing easy. But this time around, I feel something different about it.
“Take it easy, take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can“
I think “take it easy” is hard to do. The sound of your own wheels is your own thought that can really drive you very crazy. It often time drives you to take thing too hard and forget to “take it easy”… I think this part of the song is a good reminder of that we should step back and take it easy sometimes. Of course that does not mean to be careless or less attentive. I also think taking thing easy but with careful and attentive can be blissful.
By the way, you may not know Glenn Frey who was one of the band lead just died on January 18, 2016. Glenn was the co-author of “Take It Easy” with Jackson Browne. I have been listening to Eagles’ greatest hit album all this weekend. “Take It Easy” is again repeating one more time …
“Take it easy, take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy
Come on baby, don’t say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me”
I had never heard of The Eagles. (no surprise) Listening as I write. 🙂 Good advice. The sound of my wheels is usually loudest in the early morning before it’s time to get up. Nothing to do but lay there and listen to them grinding away.
So thanks for the recommendation. And thanks for oiling my wheels.

🙂 I do know for sure that you have great wheels and they still move fast and sharp. No need for any oiling.. Thank you.

I also love The Eagles. I think your chosen song has a message for me, and today, we are taking it easy, well at least for part of the day. 😀 Thanks for the reminder, YC. Have a happy one.

Taking it easy is sometimes hard, indeed. I still enjoy Eagles from time to time and «Take it easy» was definitely one of the biggest. Sad with Glen Frey passing away, but I did hear the news.

Another famous person died!! 😯 There has been too many of them this last month! I heard that Maurice White of ‘Earth Wind And Fire’ (another 70’s band) died in January too. We’ve had a lot of British people in music, radio and TV all die in January – a very strange month! 😐
I remember that song very well from my childhood – getting an old woman now! 😉 I was never really into the Eagles, but I’m pretty sure my brother was at some point. I recall their music being played in our house and names mentioned quite a lot back in the 70’s and 80’s.
It’s a good message in those lyrics about taking it easy, but I’m not sure about the other lines referring to (she saving he) that could turn out a little unreliable!
I’m sure we all have to remind ourselves from time to time, that some things are not worth getting upset over. Or we need to just chill out more, give our poor busy minds some floating space without heavy going thoughts on anything going on.
I hope you are feeling calm and suitably chilled now? 🙂

Oh, I did not know about Maurice White of ‘Earth Wind And Fire’ and others who died in January, a strange month indeed …
I found out some people here do not even know about the Eagles (and they are not young) too. The Eagles’ songs could be considered country or country rock or soft rock; so their songs may not sync. with everyone. I do not into ‘Earth Wind And Fire’ much either 🙂
I do not quite get about the other lines mean. I guess these lines mean he wanted to know whether the girl wanted to go along with him based on the a few lines before. The whole song was really about a guy wanted to pick up girls. I was enjoying the song this way all this time but I just hear about it differently this time. Perhaps, I am getting old 🙂
Thank you, I am calm and very chilled now 🙂

I have the Eagles’ record, YellowCable. I know the song you speak of, and yes our thoughts can really drive us crazy. That is why it is good practice to Master those thoughts telling them to be still. A lot easier said then done. This year so many rock and rollers from our era have died. It’s so sad to realize our era is passing away. ❤

You are right, Amy. Telling your thoughts to be still is also as hard. Practicing to calm your mind is a good idea.

One of my favorite bands growing up – and even today their music resonates. Of there songs, if there is one that makes me sit back and simply enjoy the moment this is it…and you describe it well “The sound of your own wheels is your own thought that can really drive you very crazy.” Wish you a good weekend ~

Lovely tribute to Glenn Frey, I listened to them in high school and preferred his voice over Don Henley’s. My favorite was “The One You Love”. Back in the day we made mix tapes on cassettes. I remember fondly lying on my bedroom floor listening to him while doing homework. It’s a sad passing, but thanks for bringing back these memories.

Love the Eagles too and saw them in concert twice, also Don Henley when he was doing his solo act. Not really easy listening but easy to listen to… this song tells me to let things go… something I am learning and practicing at this time in my life.

Yes, that is good message to take from this song – let thing go. It is very good to practice let go. It is easy saying but it is very difficult to do. Thank you!

Such a beautiful post – and I noticed you did not say “the Eagles” which I recently learned is wrong – it is “Eagles”
And you know YC – I enjoyed this post so much because I k is this song well and never really thought of it the way you pointed out the wheels….
And the way you inserted the two stanzas and wrote / it had nice flow – I felt the smoothness of the song!
I have felt this way a few times with songs – twice with the song Drive from The Cars – where I knew the song from childhood and it was just on.
But then hearing one day leaving a theme park – the acoustics were tight and the song tugged at my soul.
It was divine.
It feels similar to how maybe you felt hear – I love when music moves us – it really is a gift….

Oh, you are right when music moves you. It is a gift. Thank you for reminding of “Drive from The Cars” again. I am listening to it now. I also think you the songs you grew up with have deeper attach to you. I guess that is true for everything else too. Thank you, Please have a good weekend.

Yes – I agree that the songs we grow up with have that special attachment –
And quick story….
We used to watch a show called “behind the music” and it featured all types of bands -‘we watched about 10 or maybe 15-‘anyhow – all were ok – but the most amazing one that was superb was the Phil Collins one – they went back to Genesis with Peter Gabriel and it was succinct – but the real charm (we think – because we discussed it a bit) well it was the music and the way the writers used so many songs – it was also that we knew those songs – and you know yellow cable – I had not realized that I knew that many Phil Collins songs – but bam! There they were – and so many!
We determined that there must be different writers and the ones that did this show were brilliant – or maybe it was copyright free and they could have free reign – like sometimes I know shows cannot play the music without paying or w-o permission (oh so litigious) – but I think the editors or writers knew how to play some low music and then the selections were spot on!
Gosh – it was like a walk down memory lane – but it was also so enjoyable to hear the songs – and was unique – well unique enough for me to think of it with someone like you has I think has similar music stretch – ha!
Have u ever herd of the show?

I do not think I’ve seen the show but I think I have seen Bee Gee documentary. It was amazing to me how they wrote or compose a song. There were a lot of efforts and time put into a song. It was great to learn the process they did.
Your story reminds me of songs that are chosen to accompany part of certain scenes in movies or TV shows. Sometimes they are so matching together that the songs become more powerful than the movie and dig even deeper to you.

I agree- and speaking of Phil Collins – and documentary shows – I also saw a snippet of a show about Miami Vince (huge show in the 80’s – and I have never seen an episode – only started watching TV in last handful of years and still do not watch it all the time) anyhow, they noted how the music chosen for the show was part of the success – like a sitcom uses laugh tracks to help the audience – and then they showed a scene of the guys driving to “In the air tonight” by Phil Collins…. on this miami highway and it was exactly as you said…. digs even deeper…..
