I was returning home from a half way around the world trip last week. The trip was not bad. Things needed to be done got done. My spirit was high from finishing the nice trip. I was looking forward to return home for a nice weekend rest. The returning part of the trip did not go so well when the agent at Bengaluru airport in Bangalore informed me of my last fright out of JFK airport to my city was cancelled (it was a multiple-leg flight). I somewhat knew there were a snow storm on the way from the south to NYC. I pressed on. I wanted to get at least to JFK airport.
The nice agent finally said,
“Oh, it looks like your flight is not cancelled.”
“But I could not give you the boarding pass for the flight out of JFK.”
“You will have to get it when you get there”.
Did I hear it right ? I thought to myself,
“Yeah, it is ok to get the boarding pass there. It is not uncommon”.
I immediately checked in. I had a high hope!
My last international flight before getting to JFK airport from Bengaluru airport was from Heathrow airport. The news about the weather in US at Heathrow was about the same that snow was continuing on to NY.
Finally, my flight left Heathrow and I caught a sight of Heathrow airport below. Good bye Heathrow. I still had hope that my flight out of JFK airport was still good.
The flight from Heathrow was smooth. I forgot any thing about the snow storm and my potential cancelling flight out of JFK airport. As I walked out of the plan, my name was called at the gate. I thought that was a good news thinking the airline knew me and tried to get me on the soonest flight. I was wrong. The agent at the gate told me my next flight would be on Sunday. It was Friday night and that would be about two nights in NY city somewhere.
So much for the high hope of returning home that weekend. I was sure that the snow storm could not be that bad. But I was again wrong about that. It was quite severe that I could only stay in the hotel room and my flight out on Sunday was cancelled too. The next available one would be on Monday night or Tuesday. Aggg…
Well, it was not all that bad. I had good rest and probably better than if I were home. I was quite enjoy watching the entire series of “Resident Evil” , a few from series Star Trek the Next Generation and some other movies. I was busy finding the soonest flight out of JFK. I was even considering plan to rent a car and drive home myself (Yeah, not a good idea) or take an Amtrak train out of Penn station in NY city. It seemed like making a plot to get out of prison. I also learned that snow storm has name too. Jonas is the name of the storm. A cool name 🙂
Once in a while, I took a break to take a peak out of the window to see what it looked like outside. I hoped snow stopped and hoped the road was clear. I really appreciated those who kept the road clean. It was cold, very cold. Jonas dumped 30.5 inches at the JFK airport. It broke the record of 26 inches during Feb 16-18, 2003. That was a lot of snow!
Now at home listing to “Ain’t Got Far To Go” by Jess Glynne which I came to know on the airplane during this trip gets me thinking differently about the meaning of the song.
Oh boy, what is it about flight cancellations that makes me crazy? It is not the end of the world, but when you want to get home, you want to get home and the upheaval is so stressful. You handled it brilliantly and I am glad you got to watch Star Trek The Next Generation as it is one of my favorites. I am also glad that you are now home safe.

Thank you, Cindy. I know exactly what you meant. I have the same feeling. When I want to get home, I really want to get home :). My choice of hotel was not wise either (it has no kitchen, thus I depended on restaurant delivery and know how that went) 😦

Some things happen for a reason, I think. It was good that it was not something worse. Only your flight cancellation. At least you have seen those movies. Right? I am glad you’re OK now. 🙂

That is a good thought that it could be worse. I had good rest and plenty of time to watch movies 🙂 Thank you!!

That was quite the snowstorm! So glad you’re now safely home, YC. It sounds like you made the best of a bad job, and at least extended your holiday by a few days.:) Great photos!

Glad you are back home. A little adventure doesn’t hurt no one 😉 As I always say – if they bring me home in one piece, I cannot ask for more. At least you have got some pictures and got acquainted with Jonas.

That was quite a welcome home you got there. And over 30 inch of snow, that is indeed quite a dump. Sorry for the trouble, but at least you are home now.

Oh dear, we’re all having to get coaches to get around the flooded west coast mainline for a few months, I hadn’t realised the snow was so severe in NY. Very tiring for you. All my best Charlotte

Well it looks like your delay was a blessing in disguise! It sounds like you got a good rest and had a refresher with some fairly entertaining media (and scary…. resident evil.. ARghhhhh lol)

What a trip you had!! This is largely why I don’t like flying myself – all those delays and mess ups. (Saying it politely!) 😉 Trains in the UK are nearly as bad as planes – ridiculous way to travel.
I like the snowy, icy window and also your view from your window. I have a good view of the street where I live from my bedroom window, but I’d love to live overlooking our local train station, all the people coming and going would keep me occupied for hours. I love busy streets!! 😀

It was little (not) fun trip 🙂 I’ve not had such bad case as this one. I had a delay about 8 hours at the air port before with good confident that the next scheduled flight will go. This one was hopeless nearly and I had to work hard to get the flight out sooner than the airline arranged one for me.
I thought train travel would be more deterministic. You made me think differently now. I still like train traveling than by plane or car (perhaps from my childhood impression).
I am glad that you like the icy window and the view from the hotel window. I can see how you like seeing busy street below from your window. Oh yes, that would be fun but I hope the noise does not bother you 🙂

It would be very noisy to live near the station – especially at night when everyone is coming out of the pubs and clubs (a lot of drunken screaming and shouting!) I live just up the road from the station, and at times during the summer when all the windows are open and people coming home from the night out – ugh – it’s more noisy than the day!! It’s a bit of fantasy of mine to live in one of the flats overlooking the station, but yes, reality says…no way!! 🙂

Oh, up a road from the station sounds good 🙂 . I think can get a sense of what is going down but not yet to have full effect of the noise or things you do not want to be near.

It must have been so tough walking off the plane from Heathrow and then hearing the news about your cancelled flights…but it seems you took it pretty well and created something positive from it. The second photo describes not just the weather perfectly, probably your mood too when you realized you were spending the weekend cooped up in a hotel. Good to hear you finally got out of there. Cheers to a good weekend.

It was the heart sinking feeling. I did not think I took it well. I went to the airline help desk and worked with her for very good why trying to get the next soonest flight out of NY as soonest possible. I have to thank her that she was very helpful and was very patient with me. Thank you and Happy Valentine’s Day.

I’ve been in similar situations, and it is a crushing feeling to have such delays ~ but given the crappy option (a hotel for the weekend) you took advantage of the hand you were dealt ~ relaxed and enjoyed it as much as you could. I always feel a bit sad for the airline workers who must feel a bit frustrated as they deal with us unhappy customers 🙂 Cheers to a great week ahead.

How do I get my blog to appear like yours where people only can see the first line so they have to click on the actual blog. I het yo meant archive hits because people read pages rather than individual blogs? Thanks in advance?

You meant you want your main page (not individual post) to list posts you have right? If that is what you meant then I believe you can set your post as “Gallery”. That is how I did it. I am not sure that applies to other theme though.

Oh, winter storms are NO fun…traveling or not! I don’t miss them one bit. I had 40 years of the white stuff, and my heart couldn’t take it no more. It sure is pretty to see in pictures though.

Ah, but for the complexities of life! I bet by the time you got home you gave out a HUGE sigh of relief! Nothing worse then canceled flights. I have nightmares of my own, not so lucky to be able to get a hotel room but being stuck at the airport itself. So glad you are now safely home!!!
