I just looked up the “Calla Lillies” and learned that there was a flower language boom during Victorian period in 19th. century. Someone can send flowers to another person as a mean for sending a specific message with pre-arranged meaning. It must be really cool during the period of time.
It is coincident that we just have another even simpler message to send than flowers. You may already have heard of “Yo!”, a recent smart phone application that is gaining popularity. It took me a bit to comprehend what it is. Once you know what it is, it seems cool. “Yo!” is the only word to send. It is simple but can mean different things to different people at a given time. It is efficient and can be a heart warming to see someone say “Yo!” to you. It is also be a secret message without any information in the message itself (cryptographers may not have job left – just kidding).
I am still an old fashion, sticking with flowers. I am sending these Calla Lilies – with a good meaning 🙂
A bit of the story that I found around Calla Lilies. Calla Lillie has been associated with “Holiness, Faith and Purity”. They have become a symbol of “Youth and Rebirth”. Reference: http://www.teleflora.com/flower-news/post/what-do-calla-lilies-represent-570744.aspx
“Please have a nice day!”

OH, Sweetie, this is such a heart warming post. I LOVE your photos of the lilies. They are so pure and their lines are perfect. The information you gave I did not know and I thank you for giving it. I will stick with flowers too. I don’t like the word “YO” for some reason. I’ve heard it said, and it has a derogatory tone to it. At least the ones I have heard were. It is kind of on the lines of, “Hey, you!” demanding your attention. But anyways, I ramble. I really enjoyed your post. I am always coming here when I see you at Petals to make sure I haven’t missed a new post. (smile) Love, Amy

Thank you Amy for coming 🙂 I think you are right about the tone of the word. I have not heard of it in the degrading tone before. It plays nice in my mind but you are right that can be demanding or commanding your attention. Good point.

I’ve heard of the Victorian flower language. Too bad it’s no longer in fashion. The calla lilies are beautiful. I had some burgundy colored ones as my wedding bouquet.

These are absolutely gorgeous, you’ve captured them wonderfully!!♥ And by strange coincidence I have some just like it growing in the backyard where I live, blooming quite beautifully! 🙂 I always look forward to when they come out, they are very much my favourite flower. They are so elegant, like a ballet dancer leaning backwards!
I discovered a picture of Queen Victoria lying in state a few months ago, and she had a few of those Calla Lilies in her hands. I tried to Google search it to give you a link, but could only find this picture on a blog, and it’s not as good or as close up and those lilies are there, but they’re just above her head. http://moorvy-vikipedia.blogspot.co.uk/2010/06/say-cheese-part-5.html#comment-form I read somewhere that Calla Lilies in Victorian times were very much associated with funerals, and it’s interesting that you mentioned them as being a symbol of youth and rebirth, I’m wondering if that is why they were used for funerals, hoping the spirit would be reborn and become youthful again. Nice thought! I used three lilies from my garden for my Mothers funeral, they looked quite lovely, but during the service a sunbeam came through the chapel window and shone directly on those lilies laid on the top of the coffin. They lit up like no other flower I’ve ever seen before, positively glowed. It was a strange but very meaningful moment, as my Mother had always loved the way I adored those flowers. Moments like that are quite awesome!
I’m never quite sure how to use that word ‘Yo’, it makes me laugh when I hear people use it, but I think I’d definitely prefer flowers to send a message! 🙂

Wonderful! You have some growing in your backyard. I really like your analogy of them like a ballet dancer leaning backwards.
Thank you very much for the link that has the picture of Queen Victoria lying with the lilies above her head. I am fascinated about Queen Victoria and her love Albert.
Yes, the link that I found also mentioned that Calla Lilies in those time were associated with funerals. It is a bit of contradicting with a symbol of youth and rebirth. I think you are right that it is a well wishing for the person who passed away to comeback again.
How lovely that you used lilies from your very own garden for your Mother’s funeral. I can imagine how they glow beautifully with light and would create very special moment during the time..
Yes, I would prefer flowers than “Yo” for sure 🙂
Thank you Suzy!
